I subscribe to Mark and Angel Hack Life: Practical Tips for Productive Living and receive an email each time they post something new. This past week they shared 11 Ways Successful People Start Their Mornings and while the whole article interested me, one tip stood out. #3 Review Your TO-DON’T List.
I don’t know about you, but I have a daily “to-do” list and I struggle to accomplish all the tasks I assign myself. I’ve never thought about a “to-don’t” list. However, it’s a very good idea.
A ‘TO-DON’T list’ is a list of things not to do. It might seem amusing, but it’s an incredibly useful tool for keeping track of unproductive habits, like checking Facebook and Twitter, randomly browsing news websites, etc. Create one and post it up in your workspace where you can see it.
So, what would I add to my TO-DON’T list?
- While researching, follow one train of thought. It’s so easy to get sidetracked by a tiny sliver of information that may be interesting but has nothing to do with my novel or short story.
- Save the link clicking for later. I try to visit at least ten writer’s Facebook pages a day and often find myself clicking on links from their page to their books or other interesting things. From now on, I plan to copy the links to a text file and save them for the end of the day. After finishing my work, I can treat myself to some browsing.
Okay, so my list is short. For now. I plan to keep track of my activities during the day and when I find myself doing something that distracts me from the task at hand, I’ll add it to my TO-DON’T list.
