Ian McEwan on Finding Confidence

I love the honesty in this interview with Ian McEwan. I’ve felt some of the same things. For example: “Sometimes I think I don’t like writing, I really hate it…I avoid it…Other days it just is irresistible.”

Let’s put things into perspective here. McEwan is an award winning author. He won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction for his novel Amsterdam and has been shortlisted for the award multiple times. Atonement won the WH Smith Literary Award, the National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award, the Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel. Saturday and On Chesil Beach were both award winners as well.

With a resume like that you’d think this guy would be brimming with confidence and yet he says, “I don’t feel confident at all.”
